7 Easy Steps to Adopt a More Sustainable Lifestyle

It is common knowledge that the planet’s resources are depleting, and there are urgent steps required to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. Leading a sustainable life will ensure the survival of our future generations and keep the earth liveable. It requires a solid commitment to the environment and making sustainable actions part of our daily lives. Changing to an eco-friendly lifestyle is not easy. But then, when is giving bad habits up for good ever easy?

Tiny daily routine changes like purchasing habits and hobbies can significantly impact. These small choices decide the future of the planet and will determine the lives of our future generations. Here are seven easy steps to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle and play your part in securing the planet’s future.

1. Minimize the use of plastic- ditching it for good is even better.

Manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of plastic products have wrecked the planet. While manufacturing and transport lead to carbon emissions and plastic products’ disposal is impossible because of their non-biodegradable nature. Millions of tons of plastic end up in landfills, oceans, and water channels. It won’t be long before the Earth becomes a plastic planet. The solution is simple- minimizing plastic use and ditching it is even better. Opting for reusable alternatives to plastics is a sustainable life change that can save the planet’s future.

2. Choose nature over the concrete jungle.

Humans are indeed forgetful. We tend to forget Mother Earth when engrossed in life in a concrete jungle. Being close to nature keeps you connected to your roots and constantly reminds you of your responsibility to protect them. It enables you to appreciate the wonders of Earth and compels you to preserve it, not destroy it.

3. Eat less meat and dairy products.

Various research has proven that livestock farming is responsible for land, water, and air pollution. Avoiding meat and dairy products and adopting a vegan diet is one way to reduce your impact on the planet. Scientific evidence shows that even the lowest impact meat and dairy products still result in environmental harm than the least sustainable vegetable and growing cereal.

4. Learn about your planet

Action leading to change is only possible through awareness. As cliche as it sounds, knowledge is power, and if you do not know your planet, your home, then it is highly likely that you will learn what habits or actions will cause it harm. Learn about your world and help raise awareness of sustainable practices because Earth is all we have.

5. Choose public transportation or take a walk.

Choosing public transportation for your daily commute reduces the greenhouse gases your vehicle might be responsible for. Rail transit contributes a lot lesser to air pollution, and walking is perhaps the best warmup exercise and the perfect start to a fresh new day. So choosing these sustainable options over your private vehicle is a great way to be kinder to the planet.

6. Shop with a conscience and support sustainable companies

Fast fashion and business are some of the most prominent pollutants, and when you indulge with them, you become part of the problem. Shun unethical brands and quit buying from unsustainable businesses that profit from fast fashion. By supporting sustainable labels, you can make a conscious effort to simultaneously help the people and the planet.

7. Wash your clothes less often.

Do you know that we have been conditioned to wash our clothes more than is necessary? It results in water wastage, and the harmful chemicals in detergents impact marine life. Unless your clothes have odor and stains that are impossible to remove from ‘spot cleans,’ washing clothes shouldn’t be done as often. You can reduce your fashion footprint with proper garment caring habits and a conscious selection of sustainable brands.

These easy steps can help you make conscious lifestyle changes for sustainable living. Lastly, you can use your power of voice to share information and be a fierce advocate for sustainable living. Whether over a coffee chat, social media, or through your sustainable business start-up plan, share the importance of a sustainable lifestyle and spark interest in the topic. Play an active role as the resident of the planet earth- your future generations will thank you and love you for it.
